Department: Parks & Recreation Reports to: Parks Maintenance Supervisor

Summary: Under basic supervision, performs unskilled and semiskilled general labor work in cleaning and maintenance of City parks; operates vehicles, equipment, and tools in compliance with all safety regulations and standard procedures.

Essential Functions: Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Performs general labor tasks to maintain safe, attractive, and user-friendly City parks; maintains park facilities, grounds, sports fields, playgrounds, and public areas; duties may vary according to job assignment.
  • Performs park maintenance tasks, including weed control, mowing, and watering; cleans up trash, debris, and restrooms; prunes and trims trees and shrubs; assists with setup and cleanup for special events; cross-trains in a variety of skills; maintains and operates vehicles and equipment according to Parks Department standards.
  • Utilizes proper safety precautions in all work performed; reports problems and emergency situations; recognizes, avoids, and reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents, and injuries.
  • Supports the departmental operations with regular and timely attendance.
  • Supports the relationship between the City of Odessa and the public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines: High school diploma or GED preferred. Some related outdoor work experience is preferred but not required.

Knowledge of:
  • Basic safety procedures and regulations, and tools and equipment used in grounds maintenance.
Skill in:
  • Safe and efficient operation and maintenance of tools and equipment.
  • Following standard operating and safety procedures.
  • Closely following verbal and written instructions and procedures.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers.

License and certification requirements: A valid Texas State Driver's License is required.

Work is performed indoors, outdoors, and at City facilities; requires constant physical efforts, and the ability to bend, reach, stoop, and lift objects, use hands to operate equipment; handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; may be exposed to safety hazards and dangerous tools and equipment; safety precautions must be followed, including use of safety equipment. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; may work on slippery and uneven surfaces and are exposed to loud noise, odors, and dirt. City approved safety shoes must be worn.
